With less than a month to go before the start of the IAAF World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar, Team Guyana’s outfit is yet to be officially selected and released to the public.
However, president of the association, Aubrey Hutson, revealed to this publication yesterday that three athletes have been earmarked for selection to the September 27 to October 6 event.According to Hutson, USA based, Aliyah Abrams (400m), national long jump record holder, Emanuel Archibald and USA born 800m runner of Guyanese descent, Quamel Prince will more than likely be the nation’s representatives at the 10-day championships to be staged in the Qatari capital.
Hutson wrote: The Athletics Association of Guyana has earmarked three athletes thus far to represent Guyana at the upcoming World Championships in Doha, Qatar. Athletes who would have made the qualifying entry standards are Aliyah Abrams in the 400m and Quamel Prince in the 800m.
However Emanuel Archibald should qualify for the long jump by the numerical standards. The IAAF will invite the top 32 athletes for his event, which Archibald is within the field considering only three athletes from any country can be entered into an event.
Realistically, Abrams may be Guyana’s best bet to perhaps make it to the quarterfinal round.
The quarter-miler was a finalist at the recently concluded Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
Notes: The World Championships which takes place every two years, will be in its 17th edition. The event has a history of delivery iconic athletic moments which include gold medal wins for sprint legend, Usain Bolt and long distance champions, Sir Mo Farah and Tirunesh Dibaba.
More than 2000 of the world’s top athletes will be competing for 192 medals set to be awarded across 49 finals during the competition, which gets underway on Friday, September 27 with the midnight Marathon.
