Trinidad: Baby left in care of 13-year-old brother dies

(Trinidad Express) A seven-month-old baby boy died of last Thursday after becoming lodged between the wall and bed at the family’s Point Fortin home.

According to police, baby Mussai Roland of Southern Main Road, in Point Fortin was left in the care of his 13-year-old brother.

Police said the mother went to visit the child’s father around 2:45 p.m.

 
It was reported that the teenager fed Mussai and put him to bed, then went outside to play with friends.

Hours after checking on the infant, he was found unresponsive, and lodged between the bed and wall with one leg suspended in the air.

The boy alerted neighbours who took the baby to the Point Fortin Area Hospital around 6:10 p.m.

Medical staff pronounced the baby dead on arrival.

A post mortem was expected to be conducted on Friday, however, no relatives showed up, police said.

The post mortem had to be postponed and rescheduled to next week.

Homicide Division, Children’s Authority and the Child Protection Unit have been informed.
