Dear Editor,
On Saturday, 96 year old Elder Granny Marks had a powerful vision.
Known throughout GT and beyond for her kindness and compassion, called by some of the countless people she’s helped feed and clothe as a ‘living saint’, Granny Marks woke up on Saturday surrounded by a Light that left her murmuring, “Beautiful, beautiful.” She called to me urgently and when I went to her side, “Work to be done,” she whispered, “work to be done.” Not thinking anything of her words, I drew back her curtains, and she gasped. I looked out at the peaceful scene that had caught her eyes: the blue sky, the wisps of clouds, and the coconut trees swaying gently in the wind. Two parrots landed on a branch. Up and down they bobbed in the breeze. “The sky is getting bluer and bluer, more and more beautiful,” I heard Granny Marks say, and turned to find her gazing outside, mesmerized. “Such joy and happiness I see.”
Sensing something special about the moment, I crawled into her narrow hospital bed with her to see the world from her perspective. Her body was soft and yielding, and I could feel an energy building in her bedroom, when she grasped my hand and hugged it tightly to her chest. As she continued speaking softly, I heard the wonder in her voice, and felt her determination to act. My sister joined us, and together we listened with growing awareness, and when she stopped speaking, we promised to take her message out to the world.
Written across the Guyanese sky, Granny Marks saw a vision of beauty and happiness enveloping Guyana. She urged us, all of Guyana, to hold a vision of open-hearted politicians taking charge of the future of the country – stateswomen and statesmen, wielders of power, who put the needs of the country, and its citizens before their own. Everyone must hold that vision, she whispered. We are not powerless. Our greatness lies in our togetherness. Everyone knows that when we hold a vision of something we want, for better or worse, it comes to us. We’ve seen it in little ways, and some of us have seen big things happen. Now we must vision together, every one of us. Now is the time.
