Trial of accused in Robb St arson murders discontinued

The trial of the two men accused of killing a father and his two daughters by setting their home on fire in 2014 was yesterday brought to an end by Justice Brassington Reynolds after what he described as “irregular contact” between an “interested” member of the public and a member of the jury.

No money to fix Region Six dams

Region Six Chairman David Armogan yesterday revealed that Regional Executive Officer (REO) Kim Williams-Stephen has indicated to him that no money is available for badly needed works on dams in the region.

Guyana’s National Table Tennis players are absent from   the Pan American Championships  currently underway in Paraguay and the reason for the team’s absence is anybody’s guess.

Guyana’s senior national table tennis players, after a notable showing at the 61st Caribbean Regional Table Tennis Federation (CRTTF) senior championships, qualified for the 2019 ITTF Pan American Champions which began in  Paraguay yesterday and runs until September 8   However, the national men’s team will not be participating at the high-level tennis championships. 

Key GPL feeder breaker fails

A 13.8 kV feeder breaker at the Sophia substation suffered a failure at approximately 00:57 hrs yesterday morning resulting in a power loss which affected service to customers in Berbice and sections of East Demerara, according to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).

Tenders in for major power rehab project

Tenders were yesterday opened at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board for the rehabilitation of the Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) distribution Network at the Guyana Power & Light (GPL) with the highest bid received being over $3.7B.

In response to the reports of the devastation experienced in The Bahamas as a result of Hurricane Dorian, the Chairman of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), Allen Chastenet, has assured the island state of CARICOM’s solidarity and pledged to assist with whatever help may be required.
