A 13.8 kV feeder breaker at the Sophia substation suffered a failure at approximately 00:57 hrs yesterday morning resulting in a power loss which affected service to customers in Berbice and sections of East Demerara, according to the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).
It was the latest in a string of failures at GPL despite promises by the corporation and the government of improvements.
Customers residing in West Demerara were not affected, a release from GPL said yesterday.
The power utility pointed out that work to restore electricity supply commenced immediately and all affected areas with the exception of customers from ‘A’ to ‘E’ Field Sophia were repowered at approximately 03:25 hrs.
The company stated that the reason for its Sophia customers not being repowered at that time was due to them being powered through the damaged F6 Feeder emanating from the Sophia Sub Station.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the area and preliminary inspection of the damage include rehabilitation of the circuit breaker. Remedial work was expected to conclude at approximately 16:00 hrs yesterday, thus enabling the affected customers to be re-powered.
GPL say it is aware of the inconvenience caused by these outages and offered apologies to its customers the release added.
