Henrietta was crowned champions of the Essequibo/Pomeroon leg of the Namilco U17 Football competition after defeating Dartmouth Dominators 2-1 Sunday at the Imam Bacchus Cricket ground at Columbia.
Aldrin Austin was the hero for Henrietta as he bagged a first half double to seal the unlikely result. Austin opened the scoring compliments of a ninth minute conversion.
He would then make his presence felt once more, doubling his team’s lead in the 27th minute. For the loser, Steffon Clarke bagged a consolation goal in the 58th minute.
With the win, Henrietta walked away with $50,000 and the championship trophy. On the other hand, the loser pocketed $10,000 and the corresponding accolade.
Meanwhile, NAMILCO’s Finance Director Fitzroy McLeod said, “As the title sponsor for this league, we are very pleased to see Essequibo competing given the challenges we would have been experiencing with the rain. Lots of talent has been coming to the fore as a result of this investment we have made with the Guyana Football Federation. We will continue to put the enhancement and empowerment of our young people at the helm of what we do as a company.”
