A hire car driver has since been placed into police custody after he allegedly ran over a vagrant with his motor car on the New Amsterdam Public Road.
According to information gathered, around 11 pm on Wednesday, the driver of motor car, HC 6742, was proceeding along the Main Road in New Amsterdam, when he allegedly ran over something.
Stabroek News was told that the driver then stopped his car and exited to see what he had hit and it was then that he discovered the vagrant underneath his car.
The now deceased man was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. He reportedly suffered head injuries.
The driver of the car after rushing the man to the hospital then visited the New Amsterdam Police Station and lodged a report. He was then arrested and administered a breathalyser test which revealed that he was not under the influence of alcohol at the time.
The vehicle involved in the accident has since been lodged at the New Amsterdam Police Station.
