He was treated and immediately transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital but died on the way to the city hospital.

The driver of the hire car, which carried licence plate HC 8566, was taken into police  custody after the accident.

According to a police source, the driver has since claimed that he was proceeding south along the Islington Public Road at a fast rate around 12.15 when the child allegedly ran into his path. After the driver hit the child, the car then reportedly toppled and landed in a nearby drain.

The police are still investigating.
