The two brothers who were severely burnt during an incident at their Corentyne, Berbice home less than a month ago are said to be out of danger and are recovering well in the United States, where they are currently receiving treatment.
To date, Besham Sohan, 1, and Gansham Sohan, 4, have undergone several surgeries, all of which were successful.
Non-governmental organization, Saving Hands Emergency Aid (SHEA) in a recent Facebook post yesterday said that Besham, who was not expected to survive his injuries in Guyana is recovering quicker than his older brother.
“The youngest, Besham was not expected to survive in Guyana and he traveled to the US connected to a ventilator. He is now recovering quicker than his older brother, Gansham. Besham will be discharged from the hospital ICU to a regular ward as he continues his treatment while Gansham will remain in ICU,” SHEA said.
The NGO announced that because of the “incredible efforts” needed to care for the brothers, they will be sponsoring a second caregiver to assist their mother.
The two brothers are currently at a hospital in Texas which has agreed to treat them for free.
SHEA in a previous post had said that treatment for the brothers was not available in Guyana and as such a decision was made to have them taken overseas.
The cost to medevac them was $45,000 USD equivalent to $9.4M.
The incident occurred around 7 pm on August 16th at the boys’ #48 Village, Corentyne, Berbice home.
Prior to their departure, they were both warded at the Georgetown Public Hospital Burn Care Unit where their conditions were listed as critical.
Reports are that the children’s mother, who singlehandedly maintains her six children, was in a hammock breastfeeding the youngest child. She lit a small fire for the smoke to get rid of mosquitoes when another of the children reportedly threw dry grass on the fire causing it to spread rapidly. As a result, both Gansham’s and Besham’s clothing caught afire.
SHEA said that the brothers have a “very long” road to recovery.
As such, SHEA is pleading with the public for their continuous support. “We are in great need of financial support to assist this family,” SHEA stated.
