A fire suspected to be of electrical origin yesterday completely destroyed a two-story wooden house at Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant, Corentyne.
According to residents, the fire started sometime before 5.30 pm.
Deodat Kasso, 46, resided with his sickly 71-year-old mother in the house located at Lot 16 Miss Phoebe, Port Mourant.
He explained, “Me come pon garden around quarter to 5 and when we come me bathe and thing and come out one truck pick me up to go load the baigan that I lef and when me come back me collect my cycle and me go the shop me had to pay somebody that work with me and then somebody call me and tell me house a burn down”.
He added, “When me come me can’t do nothing and them neighbours call the fire people and them take 15 minutes to come down, before them come the whole house burn down”.
The man said, his house which consisted of four bedrooms upstairs with a living room and a downstairs kitchen was fully furnished.
Residents explained last evening that there was a blackout in the village yesterday and it was moments after the electricity return-ed that they heard a loud sound.
According to one resident, they then saw smoke coming from a distance but thought “somebody burning rubber”.
However, upon investigating they discovered that the house was already completely engulfed in flames.
According to residents, throughout yesterday the voltage fluctuated. Some residents reported that several bulbs blew out for them also.
Kasso, who broke into tears last evening said, “Me mother deh by my brother and me cousin them call me to go sleep by them”.

The fire service and police have launched an investigation.
