A city magistrate yesterday jailed a 26-year-old miner for three years after he was found guilty of  four offences including wounding a police officer and armed robberies.

Magistrate Annette Singh found Orin Ridley guilty of the four offences committed during the year.

The two robbery charges stated that on 31st January, 2019 at Albert Street, Albouystown, while being armed with a gun, he robbed Sadika Ramlakhan of a handbag valued $1,000, a cellphone valued $22,000, an umbrella valued $1,000, a record book valued $1,000 and an apron valued $1,500 and on the same date and at the same location, while being armed with a gun, he robbed Akash Ramlakhan of a pedal cycle valued $18,000.

Another charge alleged that on March 12th, at Lot 173 Campbell and Sussex streets, Ridley assaulted Nigel Reid with intent to prevent his arrest.

The final charge stated that on the same date and at the same location, Ridley wounded Clive Clarke, a police constable, with intent to prevent his arrest.

After the trial concluded yesterday in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court Eleven, Magistrate Singh sentenced Ridley to three years in jail for each robbery charge and one year each for the wounding and assault charges. The sentences are expected to run concurrently so Ridley will only serve three years in jail. The trial was prosecuted by prosecutor Visram Ramjattan.
