A 20-year-old carpenter who said he robbed a woman of her phone and other articles so that he could buy milk and pampers for his child was yesterday sentenced to two years in prison for the crime.
Julian Cornette pleaded guilty with explanation to a robbery with violence charge, which was read by Magistrate Faith McGusty in the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court Five.
The charge stated that on September 9th, at Light Street, Georgetown, Cornette robbed Jelena Vorel of a phone valued $50,000, a bag valued $6,000 along with $6,000 cash and during or after the robbery, he used personal violence on her.
In his explanation, Cornette said, he was drinking with his friends when his girlfriend called him and told him that his child was in need of milk and pampers. He then got frustrated because he had no money to purchase the items. However, he promised his girlfriend that he would get the items for her. He said before robbing his victim he walked the city begging for $100 but the persons he asked told him to get a job. He went on to say that his feet soon blistered and he was tired and hungry when he noticed the woman walking along the street. He proceeded to snatch her bag and tried to escape but Vorel had alerted a nearby security guard.
According to Prosecutor Annalisa Brummel, on the day in question around 10:30 hours, Cornette was on Light Street, when he saw Vorel walking in the southern direction. He walked up to her and tried snatching the bag but Vorel wouldn’t let go of it at first so he dealt her several cuffs to her body, which caused her to lose her grip on the bag. He tried escaping but was caught by a security guard.
After hearing what the prosecutor said Cornette denied hitting the woman and apologized for his actions. “I am very sorry about that. This is the first time I doing something like this,” he said. Cornette was subsequently sentenced to two years in jail.
