The Maria’s Pleasure Primary School on the island of Wakenaam in the Essequibo River was recently gifted a laptop computer by the Ministry of Communities.
The computer was donated by the ministry following a request made by the school, the Department of Public Information (DPI) reported. The ministry’s Public Relations Nicole Telford handed over the computer to Headmistress of the school, Deanne Retemiah.
According to DPI, the headmistress said that the computer will be very beneficial to the students especially since the school already has access to the internet through the government’s E-government programme. She noted that they face some challenges when the previous computer stopped functioning.
Meantime, the students will soon benefit from the school feeding programme, the report said. Retemiah indicated that the school has received the booklet which they will have to fill out and submit by next week.
Additionally, the school has done exceptionally well at the recent National Grade Six Assessment, recording a 100 per cent pass rate, DPI reported. The headmistress revealed that an additional teacher was assigned to the school recently and this has eased the burden of teachers managing more than one classroom and students are now more engaged, the report said.
