Grove man remanded over gun-point attacks in North West

A Grove, East Bank Demerara man, accused of two armed attacks in the North West District, was remanded to prison yesterday.

Marlon Carter, 31, called “Short Man,” of Lot 133 Post Office Street, Grove, East Bank Demerara, denied committing the attacks after being charged before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

The first charge states that on August 24th, at Black Sand, Five Star Backdam, North West, Carter was armed with a handgun when he robbed Kumar Nandkumar of 58.3 pennyweights of raw gold, valued at $900,000.

In addition, he was charged with attempting to commit a felony on September 10th at Powis Landing, at Five Star Backdam, North West. It was alleged that he was armed with a handgun when he attempted to rob Zamal Poliah.

According to Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, it was reported that Nandkumar was at a shop when Carter approached him with the gun in his left hand. Carter allegedly hit Nandkumar in the head with the gun. Carter then allegedly relieved Nandkumar of the gold mentioned in the charge.

The prosecutor also presented information on the alleged attempted robbery of Poliah. He informed the court that Poliah was in company with three others, driving along Powis Road, when they were stopped by Carter, who was armed with a handgun. Carter allegedly demanded money and jewellery and when Poliah failed to comply with the request, he became enraged and attempted to acquire the items himself. Poliah fought back and eventually disarmed Carter.

Both matters were reported and Carter was arrested.

The prosecutor objected to bail being granted on grounds of the serious nature of the allegations. It was reported that on both occasions Carter was armed with a gun and none of the items was recovered.

Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently remanded Carter to prison and transferred the matter to the Matthews Ridge Magistrate’s Court when it is to be heard on November 4th.
