The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) will stage the Gaico Construction-sponsored Chess Grand Prix from September 21-29 at the National resource Centre, Woolford Avenue.
According to the GCF’s official social media account, the tournament will be an eight round Swiss system affair and will be FIDE rated.
This is the first tournament to be held by the new executive headed by Frankie Farley.
According to the GCF, the tournament is the first of a series of tournaments to help select the top players to represent Guyana at the Chess Olympiad next year in Russia.
Farley told Stabroek Sport that the competition will provide the players with a chance to work towards the goal of making the 2020 team.
It will also aid their development in their quest to secure international titles.
“The Grand Prix tournament represents a new approach to evaluate the level of chess players’ strength,” said Farley.
“I see the series of tournaments being the catalyst that will catapult the development of chess in Guyana when combined with other initiatives,” he added.
The tournaments have the potential to stimulate interest to play knowing wins translate to the opportunity to make the Guyana 2020 Olympiad team,” Farley added.
Each player will be allotted 90 minutes per round and 30 seconds increment after each move.
