A man who told the court that he was joking when he snatched money from his ex-boss, secured bail equal to the amount he is accused of snatching when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Phillip Adams, 42, of Lot 55 Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, appeared before Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty and denied that on September 16th at Croal Street, Georgetown, he stole $22,000 from Andrew Blackman.
Adams, who was unrepresented by counsel, told the court that he was only joking when he snatched the money. He said that Blackman knew that he was not going to take the money hence his not-guilty plea. He also asked that the magistrate let him go home, drink his medication and rest.
Blackman, who was also present at court, informed that all the other vendors constantly complain about the “jokes” Adams makes.
According to the facts articulated by police prosecutor Analisa Brumell, Adams snatched the money from Blackman, whom he used to work with, and attempted to ride off with the money. Blackman managed to kick the bicycle wheel and stop Adams from getting away.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted citing the seriousness of the allegation. She said too that the defendant seemed to know what he was doing. She added that he should know that this is not something to joke about.
The magistrate released Adams on $22,000 bail after she emphasised to him the seriousness of the allegation.
