Some of Guyana’s premier futsal players will soon be on show when the inaugural “Beat Dem Bad” futsal tournament kicks off Friday at the National Gymnasium.
The three-day tournament, which is being organised by the Georgetown District of the People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R), will see 16 top teams competing for over half a million dollars in cash and prizes.
This is according to attorney and PNC/R executive James Bond.
According to Bond, the tournament, which was launched on Friday last, underlines the importance of using sports to empower youths. Bond, who is an avid sport enthusiast, noted that the PNC/R, which will be celebrating its 62nd anniversary in the coming weeks, has always embraced the role sports play in developing a nation, particularly in fostering social cohesion and the granting of opportunities to the youth.
The initiative has secured the support of the Georgetown Mayor and City Council.
Some of the confirmed teams hail from Linden, East Coast, East Bank and the City.
They include Melanie and Beterverwagting, Silver Bullets and Swag Entertainment, Showstoppers, Empire Ballers, Agricola, Tiger Bay, Sparta Boss, Gold is Money, Back Circle, Broad Street,Albouystown, Leopold Street, Sophia All-stars and Alexander Village.
The winning team will pocket $200,000 and the runners-up $100,000.
