Man fined for assaulting mum with rolling pin

Terry Clement

A man was fined $30,000 after he admitted to using a rolling pin to assault his mother and also used abusive language.

Terry Clement appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday and pleaded guilty to charges of assault and abusive language. He admitted that on September 22nd at D’Urban Street, Lodge, Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted his mother and also used abusive language. The charges were read by Principal Magis-trate Faith McGusty.

Clement told the court that the assault was not premeditated. “I didn’t premeditate it and it was an accident,” he said. “She was going to assault me so I pick up the rolling pin to defend myself.”

The man also said that he did not hit his mother with the rolling pin and he picked it up to scare her so she would stop. He added that he was filled with “a passion” when he used abusive language towards her.

He was fined $20,000 with an alternative of one month in prison on the assault charge and fined $10,000 or one week in prison for the abusive language charge.
