A phone technician accused of having marijuana at a bar for trafficking, was granted bail after he denied the charge when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Mark Smith, 31, pleaded not guilty to the charge of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking which was read to him by Principal Magistrate Faith McGusty. It is alleged that on September 20th at Kumar’s Bar in Waterloo Street, Georgetown, Smith had in his possession, 34 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The phone technician told the court that he was at work when the police raided the place. According to Smith, just before the police arrived, he was on the other side of the road having dinner. He added that he had told a certain individual not to leave any narcotics. Smith told the court that he assumes the person might have put the narcotics in his bag but he could not be certain.
He said that during the search, the police found the cannabis in his bag and even though he explained to them that it did not belong to him, they still arrested him because the bag belonged to him.
Smith was granted $50,000 bail and ordered to return to the court on a later date in October.
