IAAF World C/ships kicks off tomorrow

The IAAF World Athletics Championships gets underway tomorrow and Guyana’s medal hopes are pinned on the trio of Aliyah Abrams, Emanuel Archibald and Quamel Prince.

The Championships will be staged in Doha, Qatar until October 6.

According to President of the Association, Aubrey Hutson, the USA based, Abrams will contest the 400m, national long jump record holder, Emanuel Archibald will battle it out in the sand and USA born 800m runner of Guyanese descent, Prince will match strides with the world best in the two-lap event during  the 10-day Championships to be staged in the Qatari capital.

Abrams’ World Championships campaign begins next Thursday while Archibald springs into action on Saturday. Prince will first face the starter’s pistol on Tuesday.

Archibald’s coach, Kerry Lee Ricketts, a Strength Conditioning Coach/Jump Coach/ Massage Therapist at the The University of the West Indies, Jamaica will also be in attendance.

Realistically, Abrams may be Guyana’s best bet to perhaps make it to the quarterfinal round.

The quarter-miler was a finalist at the recently concluded Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.

include gold medal wins for sprint legend, Usain Bolt and long distance champions, Sir Mo Farah and Tirunesh Dibaba.

More than 2000 of the world’s top athletes will be competing for 192 medals set to be awarded across 49 finals during the competition, which gets underway on Friday, September 27 with the midnight Marathon. Stabroek Sport will keep readers updated on the trio’s performances.
