“They took from me what I didn’t even have,” were the words of a tearful Carole Chester, moments after she was freed of a charge of obtaining almost $1 million by falsely pretense.
Chester, 50, was on trial before Magistrate Rhondel Weever in Georgetown on the charge that she, between August 1st and September 30th, 2018, at Georgetown, obtained $960,000 from Rayan Ferrier by falsely pretending she was in a position to obtain a house lot for him, knowing same to be false.
The woman, who during her first court appearance said she was a former advisor to ex-Mayor of Linden Carwyn Holland, was represented by attorney Eusi Anderson, who made no-case submissions in the matter yesterday.
Subsequent to the submissions being made and the prosecution’s reply, Magistrate Weever stated that based upon the evidence, the prosecution failed to prove its case against the woman and therefore the matter was dismissed.
Speaking with Stabroek News after the hearing, Chester, who tried in vain to fight back tears, noted that she has always had a drive to help people, and that the charge that was levelled against her made her realise that she cannot help everyone.
“I will not stop doing what I’m doing,” she said, “Because persons have been blessed by my work and that has encouraged me throughout the trial.”
