ST JOHN’S, Antigua,  CMC – Cricket West Indies (CWI) has shortlisted six candidates for the post of West Indies men’s head coach.

The regional governing body said yesterday it had received 34 applications for the post by the stated September 20 deadline, and had whittled down the list down to 11 before arriving at the current shortlist on September 24.

CWI vice-president, Dr. Kishore Shallow, who also serves as chairman of the Human Resources Committee, will join director of cricket, Jimmy Adams, in conducting the next round of interviews on October 1 to determine the last three candidates.

The final interview to determine CWI’s choice will be held on October 11.

President Ricky Skerritt gave the recruitment process the thumbs up, hailing its “transparency and efficiency”.

“I am pleased with what I am hearing of the transparency and efficiency of the process thus far, and the fact that we are on schedule to have a full time head coach in place soon,” said the former St Kitts and Nevis Cabinet minister.

CWI also said the six candidates shortlisted all held a minimum of Level Three coaching accreditation and would be judged on the advertised criteria previously approved by the board.

The successful individual is expected to have previously managed an international team at Test or first class level, possess a sound knowledge of high performance cricket and extensive experience in sports management.

The job of West Indies head coach has remained in discord ever since Australia Stuart Law quit following the tour of India last November to take up the role of head coach at English county Middlesex.

Englishman Richard Pybus was controversially appointed last January just days before England’s tour of the Caribbean but was axed ahead of the Cricket World Cup in England, with former West Indies batsman and captain Floyd Reifer appointed on an interim basis.

Barbadian Reifer has since overseen tours of Ireland, the World Cup and India’s tour of the Caribbean, and indicated he would be putting himself forward for the full-time position.

The new head coach is expected to be chosen ahead of the West Indies series against Afghanistan scheduled for India in November.
