The Wakenaam Cricket Committee has once again been on the receiving end of corporate sponsorship with Mike’s Pharmacy donating a quantity of equipment yesterday.
At a simple presentation ceremony, representative of the Bel-Air-based pharmaceutical company, Wayne Jones, explained that the relationship between the business and cricket is one which goes back a lifetime.
Jones said that the management has always seen the need to assist in the development of the sport since it has been one of the pillars of national unity and aids in helping Guyanese remain fit.
“We at Mike’s Pharmacy are pleased to once again give back to the communities especially in the outskirts where talent is often gone unaided. We have noticed a lot of talent coming from this island and are pleased to be associated with cricket and Wakenaam,” Jones said.
Receiving the gear which included gloves and pads, was Level Two coach, Zaheer Mohammed, who thanked the company for its timely donation and promised the company that the island will make good use of it as they look to help develop the up- and-coming cricketers on the island.
“The island has long been in dire need of supplies but has managed to produce players such as Ramnaresh Sarwan and Keemo Paul, with these gear we can now have more players coming out who do not have and utilize these and maybe one day go on to play for the West Indies,” Mohammed said.
There are seven clubs in Wakenaam which has produced players such as Leoryan Ramlakan, Ricardo Adams, Travis Dowlin, Wayne Osbourne, Neil Ramalho, Oyono Sampson, Hamlet Gordon, Dinanauth Doodnauth, Raymond Bacchus, Ahmad Khan and the late Olywin Paton.
