Trinidad: Thief sneaked into cop’s house, stole his loaded gun

(Trinidad Express) Investigators are trying to determine how a licensed firearm was stolen from the home of a 32-year-old municipal police officer.

The weapon, a 9mm pistol loaded with 17 rounds of ammunition, was found the following day.

The officer subsequently made a report to the police and lodged the weapon at the Pinto police post.

The Express was told the victim was at his Arima home on Thursday night, which he occupied with his wife and eight-year-old son.

At about 9 p.m. the house was secured and all three family members retired to bed.

The firearm was placed in a metal security safe in the victim’s bedroom.

However, when he awoke at 4.30 a.m. on Friday, he observed that his front door was open, and that the safe was missing.

The victim contacted another officer he knew from the Cumuto district.

This officer, investigators were told, communicated with an informant, which led the constable to an abandoned building along Pinto Road, where the firearm was recovered.

The victim, after learning where the weapon had been recovered, made a report to the Pinto police post.

Cpl Pustam is continuing enquiries.
