Dear Editor,
I was very privileged on Sunday to hear Professor Clem Seecharran deliver the Gafoor indentureship lecture at ’Guyana speaks’ in London.
‘Seech’ is nothing if not intellectually agile. He argued counter intuitively that the Indians bound for indentureship in the Caribbean were on a journey to freedom.
Freedom from poverty and a life of outcast in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
Much better than the life left behind.
The ships also removed caste and religious hatred on the three-month journey
It explained much to me
Yours faithfully,
John `Bill Cotton/Reform’ Mair
