A Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Coast Guardsman is one of two persons who were arrested by the police on Monday afternoon following the discovery of an unlicensed firearm and a quantity of cannabis in the vehicle in which they were travelling.
The GDF, in a press statement issued yesterday afternoon, confirmed the interception, which occurred around 2 pm on Monday along Avenue of the Republic, in Georgetown.
According to the statement, ranks of a police Anti-Crime Unit patrol intercepted the vehicle in which Lieutenant Dominic Gilpin was an occupant and conducted a search during which the unlicensed .32 Taurus pistol, a .32 magazine, two live .32 rounds of ammunition and five kilogrammes (just over 11 pounds) of cannabis sativa were found.
The statement noted that Lieutenant Gilpin has since been interdicted from duty and an investigation has since been launched.
“As is procedure, the GDF will conduct its investigation which will in no way affect that being conducted by the Guyana Police Force,” GDF said.
