Covent Garden man fined for entering Stabroek Market after closure

A Covent Garden man has been fined $15,000 after a city court heard he was seen jumping the fence at Stabroek Market after the market had closed.

Akash Rakesh, 43, of Lot 98 Covent Garden, East Bank Demerara, appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday and pleaded “guilty with explanation” to being at the Stabroek Market at prohibited hours.

The charge was read to him by Magistrate Clive Nurse. It states that Rakesh was found at Stabroek Market during a time when it was closed to the public on September 29th.

Rakesh told the court that he was sent by a friend, who is a vendor, to retrieve her umbrella and other items.

However the prosecutor stated that on the day in question, Rakesh was seen by a constable, who was on patrol, jumping over the fence to get into the market’s compound. The constable subsequently approached Rakesh and found the items belonging to the “friend” in his possession. He was arrested and hence the charge.

After listening to both sides, the Magistrate fined Rakesh $15,000 or an alternative of two weeks in prison.
