President David Granger has once again committed to using revenue earned from oil and gas to improve Guyana’s education sector.
Speaking at the “first ever” Education Exposition held to at D’Urban Park on Monday Granger promised the hundreds of teachers and student present that Guyana will build a first class education system where every Guyanese child will be educated at state expense from the Nursery to Tertiary level.
“Once you are educated, this economy will expand. We want highly trained, highly educated workers and you will be able to go out there and deliver quality performance in whatever field you choose. Employment opportunities will expand and we will want to make sure everyone of you, if you can’t be employed by some agency or corporation, you’d be able to employ yourself by expanding enterprise. You’d be able to go to manufacturing, agro-processing, mining and other forms of production,” he stressed.
Similarly Minister of Education Nicolette Henry noted that the Ministry is reforming the curriculum to equip students with 21st Century Skills such as “critical thinking, problem solving, creativity and use of digital technologies.”
“Our 2019 -2030 Education Sector plan is being designed to bridge the disparity that exists between the hinterland and the coast [as well as for] the implementation of new technologies for the delivery of education, provision of vocational and technical training for out of school youths, thereby giving them a second chance among other critical aspects of educational growth,” she said.
Chief Education Officer Marcel Hutson also reminded that Education is a necessary investment as it is a vital ingredient with the ability to propel individuals and nations through the development of the ability to recognize and take advantage of opportunities.
The Education Exposition was one of the final activities held to mark Education Month 2019. This year the month was celebrated under the theme “Education for a good life through innovation and STEAM.”
According to the Ministry, sixty-eight booths were on display with students from over 100 nursery, primary, secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
