Residents of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje Berbice, were flooded on Sunday after the expected high tide. However, the frustrated residents said the relief of the floodwater receding on Sunday was short-lived as they were faced with a worse situation on Monday morning due to the koker door being left opened.
The residents stated that the worst of the flooding was on Monday morning after water entered their homes and damaged some of their items. Some said fridges, freezers and other electrical items were damaged while others noted that their gardens and livestock were also affected.
“We find out Monday morning that somebody open the koker door and left it open so the water come in back and flood we out again Monday (morning),” a resident explained.
Dwayne Rodriquez, 29, who has resided in Sheet Anchor Village for the past 14 years, said overtopping occurs whenever there is a high tide.
“But when the koker door close we don’t get so much flood and it does run out back quick but by them left the door open we get heavy flood,’ he noted.
“We just wake up to water in we house Monday,” he added.
As of Monday afternoon, the floodwater had receded from the village. Stabroek News was told that a machine was deployed to the area to assist in reinforcing the sea defence.
The residents are calling on local authorities to ensure that the persons manning the kokers are responsible persons.
They lamented that no official or agency had taken any sort of help or hampers with supplies to the area.
