Dear Editor,
It has been fifty-two days since I have been without telephone and internet service due to a cable problem at 3rd Street, Ocean View, Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara. The telephone service was finally restored today, October 1st after much pushing around. However, the DSL service was not restored.
I called GTT to find out why the DSL service was not restored and I was told by the Customer Service Representative (CSR) that the account was disconnected for non-payment as there is an outstanding balance of $6,070 for the month of August which I must pay before the service is restored.
When I received the DSL bill for the month of August, I observed that GTT had billed me for the entire month despite no service from August 10-30. I paid $3,000 on the August bill since I believed that I should not be paying for a service which I did not receive. When I pointed this out to the CSR, she promptly told me that the $6,070 was for the modem, I have at my house. Mind you there is no line item anywhere on the bill for modem rental. Is this a new fee? I was also told by the CSR that once the outstanding balance is cleared and the service restored GTT would at some point give a rebate for the downtime.
Questions for GTT: Why wasn’t the rebate given at the end of August when the bill was being processed and you were aware that the problem had still not been resolved? Why do I have to be out of pocket and not GTT? How can the service be disconnected for non-payment when the service went down due to no fault of mine? Where is the customer service here GTT?
Why do we the customers have to suffer at the hands of these big corporations? When will our suffering end? GTT is behaving in such a manner because they know we have no choice. We either succumb to their bullyism or stay without the service. They know we would have to choose the former as there is not a viable alternative.
GTT you have frustrated me for the last 52 days and it doesn’t appear that it will end anytime soon because if I want the service I must find not only the $6,070 but an additional $9,000 for the month of September which will be due shortly. Where am I finding all this money to pay for a service I did not receive?
Yours faithfully,
Shaleeza Khan
