Each of Guyana’s ten administrative regions now has its own police commander as part of the ongoing regional decentralisation of the operations of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan on Monday told reporters that while the process has begun, it is not yet been completed.
“It has started, you know… the decision was made some time ago but we need the resources,” Ramjattan said.
He disclosed that from September 30th, some of the commanders took up their posts.
“They have literally been assigned. I understand that they have been assigned to these sub-divisions already…We have already sub-divided, let’s say Division ‘F’ of the police, which had been inclusive of Regions One, Seven and Eight, and we have done the delimitation of the borders for that region. So Division ‘F’ will now be like three different divisions,” Ramjattan said.
He added that the infrastructural work has also started including the commissioning of new headquarters and living quarters for the commanders.
“We have commenced ensuring that there is going to be construction of headquarters for the commanders, the building that is, and for the commanders’ living quarters and so on…We have constructed the living quarters, I think, at Lethem and [at] a number of other places, the construction is going on,” Ramjattan added,
He said that once the process is completed, there will be an official launch.
“The process is ongoing but as we finish all the infrastructural work and we could, you know… we will have a kind of a launch for it but that has not been completed but this alignment in [accordance] to the regional division is going on,” Ramjattan said.
The police commanders for each administrative region are as follows:
Region One (Barima-Waini) – Former Crime Chief, Senior Superintendent Wendell Blanhum

Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara) -Senior Superintendent Linden Lord
