A 13-year-old student of St John’s College is presently nursing injuries in the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after a motorcycle struck him off of his bicycle last night.
The accident occurred on Robb Street, just west of the intersection with Camp Street, around 8.30 pm. According to witnesses, Romeo Cambridge, who was the rider of motorcycle CC4437, and the teen were heading towards Camp Street, when the motorcyclist slammed into the bicycle from behind, leaving the boy badly injured. Witnesses say that the bicycle the boy was riding had no reflectors or lights.
The badly injured teen was subsequently rushed to the GPH. His grandmother, who was the only relative present at the scene at that time, refused to accompany him to the hospital.
One of the witnesses, Joey (only name given), said the boy was riding the bicycle without lights while the motorcyclist was moving at a fast rate and it seemed like he didn’t see the child until it was too late. “If he was riding at a moderate rate he would have seen the guy and would be able to manoeuvre the bike and avoided the collision,” he said.
However, according to an employee of the Guyana Police Consumers Co-operative Society supermarket, the motorcyclist swerved to avoid hitting her, which resulted in him hitting the back wheel of the boy’s bicycle.
The boy lives alone with his grandmother on Robb Street. His mother is reportedly working in the interior.
Up to press time, Cambridge was still in police custody.
