A Festival City man was shot dead by masked bandits who broke into his home early yesterday morning.
Darrell Breedy, 53, who worked as a tout outside the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, was shot once to his abdomen during a home invasion, which occurred around 3.30 am at his Lot 2037 Humming bird Street, Festival City, North Ruimveldt residence. He died on spot.
Crime Chief (ag) Michael Kingston, when contacted for a comment yesterday, told Sunday Stabroek that an investigation had been launched and that the police were looking for the suspects.
Up to late yesterday afternoon, no arrest had been made, he said.
Kingston noted that initial investigations revealed that two bandits broke into Breedy’s home.
“He [Breedy] woke up, there was massive resistance and he was shot,” Kingston said.
Sunday Stabroek learnt that the bandits, who managed to escape with a television and $11,000 in cash, gained entry into Breedy’s house through a window situated on the eastern side of the house.
After a gunshot rang out, the father of two was discovered lying face down in the kitchen in a pool of blood.
Breedy had occupied the bottom flat of the two-storey house with his wife and daughter, while his son and mother-in-law live in the upper flat. At the time of the attack, only he and his daughter were at home. (His wife is currently overseas on vacation.)
When Sunday Stabroek visited the scene yesterday, residents of the area and relatives of the dead man said the murder had left them in a state of shock.
Residents related they were awakened by the sound of the single gunshot and only learnt that it was Breedy who was shot after his daughter raised an alarm.
The daughter was too distraught to speak.
However, Breedy’s son, Keron King, said that he heard the gunshot but didn’t realised it came from his home. “After I hear the gunshot, me sista run up the step and seh ‘Daddy just get shoot, call the ambulance,’” King said.
He said when he rushed downstiars, he saw Breedy’s lifeless body in a pool of blood.
The grieving King described his father as a very smart and “cool” individal, who didn’t have any issues with anyone.
Just over two months ago, well-known Guyhoc Park mechanic Reginald Atherly was shot and killed in a similar manner.
To date, that crime remains unsolved.
Atherly, known as ‘Reggie’ and ‘Diesel Boss’, 44, was shot and killed around 4 am on July 27th during a scuffle with two gunmen, who entered his Lot G26 Guyhoc Park home.
He sustained several gunshot wounds about his body, including to his abdomen, and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.
Atherly and his family were asleep when the gunmen invaded their home. He confronted the men and was shot as a result. The men escaped, empty-handed.
The police had questioned a now remanded prisoner Marlon Bradley, who was said to be the main suspect in Atherley’s murder, but no charge has been laid against him in relation to the crime.
