With the objective of alleviating child hunger and increasing the rates of school attendance in communities marred by poverty, Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. (FFP) on October 3rd boosted the government’s school feeding programme by handing over of 10 Nutritional Feeding Centres to the Department of Education (DoE), Region 2.
At the Riverstown Primary School, Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. Chief Executive Officer, Kent Vincent officially handed over the kitchenettes to the DoE’s representative Shaundell Hercules, a release from FFP said.
Stating their commitment to the growth and development of children and the education sector, Vincent stated that FFP will continue to support the initiatives such as the Hot Meal programme and are hopeful for future fruitful collaboration with the Department of Education.
The Nutritional Feeding Centres are 16 ft by 14 ft facilities complete with kitchen, sink, cupboards and an area for the preparation of meals. Some of the other schools that benefited from this initiative taken by FFP are: Lima Sands Primary, Lake Capoey Primary, Bethany Primary, Better Hope Primary, 8th May Primary, Hampton Court Primary, Fisher Primary, Queens-town Primary and St. John’s Primary. Over 1300 students enrolled in the ten schools will benefit directly from this initiative.
The release said that FFP also has its own school feeding programme that began in 2005. During the last school term, approximately 360 students benefitted from daily nutritious meals in Regions 2, 4 and 10.
