The family of a woman who died in an accident on Saturday night after being struck down by a drunken driver on the Friendship, East Bank Demerara Public Road is calling for justice.
The dead woman, Bonita Sugrim, 24, a mother of four, of 69 Houston and Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara was struck down by a car while she was walking on the road.
The family related that the woman was on her way home from work when the vehicle struck her.
She was picked up from the parapet by public-spirited citizens and rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to the woman’s mother, Meena Kayso, the family learnt of the accident at approximately 9.15 pm. However, when they arrived at the hospital they learnt she had succumbed to her injuries.
A cousin, Jordana Sullivan told this newspaper that persons on the scene related to the family what transpired.
“One of my friend was on the road and saw the driver speeding. She said she had to come in the corner because of the speed the car was going with. This car man had already hit down my cousin and drove away when my friends saw him speeding,” she related.
She noted that the car toppled and came to a stop approximately 500 feet away from where it struck Sugrim.
Stabroek News learnt that the car struck another vehicle and lost control resulting in it turning over.
The family said that they would like to see justice served since they have learnt from the police that the driver had a high level of alcohol in his system at the time of the accident. They noted too that persons from Friendship village had related that this is not the first time his driving has claimed the life of a person.
“If the driver had stopped and picked up my cousin and take her to the hospital she might have been alive today or we could have said goodbye to her. But he left her on the road and drive away without looking back,” she said holding back tears.
“We need justice for my daughter because it is not easy to lose a child. That is not all she left four children behind. The biggest is 7 and the smallest is 2. They don’t have a mother now and we need to have justice,” the mother lamented.
The driver of the vehicle was also rushed to the hospital for medical attention and he is currently under guard at the hospital.
Investigations are continuing.
