Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) Gym standouts, Shamar Ali (elite) and Mark Crawford (youth) took home the best boxer’s awards but the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) earned the Gym trophy once again as the curtain came down on the National Intermediate Championships on Sunday night.
Named in honor of Lennox Blackmore and staged at the National Gymnasium, the three-day calendar event of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) saw some of the nation’s best up and coming pugilists matching gloves for trophies, medals and bragging rights.
Ali and Crawford, both lightweights in their respective classes, were the pick of the litter.
On his way to earning the coveted spoils, Ali defeated GDF gym mates, Anthony Lustal and Jeremiah Jackman, both on points.
Crawford, got the better of Jeffrey Joseph of the Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym in an entertaining three-round contest.
While Ali and Crawford had great individual success, the powerhouses of local boxing, GDF earned more hardware for their collective efforts.
Technical Director of the GBA, Terrence Poole dubbed the event which attracted in excess of 30 boxers a success and stated that next up on the association’s calendar is the flagship, National Open Championships.
Poole told this publication that that event is tentatively scheduled for the first or second week in November. He reminded that the Open will be used as the criteria for selection to the Caribbean Boxing Championships slated for Trinidad from December 6-9.
