Caribbean men’s singles bronze and under-21 men’s silver medallist Shemar Britton, won the men’s singles category of the 2019 edition of the Trinbago Open men’s table tennis championship at the weekend held at the national Racquet Centre Orange Grove Rd, Tacarigua, Trinidad & Tobago.
The Guyanese Olympic hopeful defeated Arun Roopnarine 3-2 in a match where he was made to work for his title.
Britton, who is pursuing studies in the twin Island Republic, defeated his rivals in the groups stage with little fuss.
The former Caribbean under – 21 champ during his round of 64 match, defeated Wayne Oudit by a 3-0 score line to advance to the round of 32 where he made light work of Sean Michael in a 3-0 victory.
In the round of 16, he accounted for Abraham Francis by a 3-1 margin.
In his quarterfinals match up, the Guyanese had the better of former Caribbean junior silver medallist Luc O Young by a 3-0 score line to advance to the semifinals where he defeated the experienced and multiple Caribbean medallist Curtis Humprey’s 3-1 to set up the final against Roopnarine.
He now sets his sights on the WASA Table Tennis Club Invitational Team Table Tennis Championships as part of his preparation and push for key international engagements leading into the 2019 – 2020 Olympic qualification events.
