A resident of Diamond, on the East Bank of Demerara, was yesterday morning robbed of his gold chain by two men who held him at gunpoint.
However, police said public-spirited citizens, who were present, gave chase and managed to apprehend one of the suspects, an 18-year-old unemployed resident of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara.
A source told Stabroek News that the victim was standing on the Diamond Access Road when the two robbers, one armed with a weapon, approached him.
The 28-year-old victim attempted to relieve the gunman of his weapon. This resulted in scuffle between the three. However, the second bandit punched the victim in his eyes, while the robber with the gun relieved him of his gold chain. The chain’s value was given as $250,000.
Subsequently, persons who witnessed the robbery pursued the two suspects and managed to apprehend one of them. Police, in a statement, applauded the effort of the residents who gave chase behind the bandits.
The chain was recovered from the captured suspect and an unlicensed .38 revolver with six live matching rounds was also found nearby.
Efforts are being made to apprehend the other suspect, police said.
