Cop charged with house lot scam

A serving member of the Guyana Police Force was yesterday brought before a city court on a charge of attempting to obtain money from a woman by pretending he was in a position to get her a house lot.

Gladwin Abrams, 28, of Lot 16 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, was arraigned before Senior Magistrate Leron Daly in Georgetown and pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The charge against him states that on July 18th, 2019, at Brickdam, Georgetown, with intent to defraud, he attempted to commit a misdemeanour by attempting to obtain $100,000 from Dina Malcolm by falsely pretending that he was in a position to grant her a house lot.

According to police, Abrams, a Detective stationed at the Providence Police Station, messaged several persons via Facebook and indicated that he was offering persons house lots from $100,000 to $1 million. Based on the information they received, the persons made contact with an investigator and told him they were being offered house lots by Abrams.

Abrams allegedly made arrangements to uplift the money from Malcolm at a canteen on South Road, Georgetown. A description of what he was wearing was given to the officers, who set up a sting operation and Abrams was later apprehended.

After listening to the police’s case, Magistrate Daly set Abrams’ bail at $50,000 bail and instructed him to make his next court appearance on November 1st.
