An unbeaten and gritty half-century from opening batsman Melroy Stephenson along with a brilliant all-round effort by Ershaad Ali spurred the University of Guyana (UG) to an exciting four-wicket win over host Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) in the latest round of the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), New Building Society (NBS) Second Division 40-over tournament yesterday.
Set a target of 157 for victory, UG led by Stephenson’s unbeaten 52, scurried home to 157-6 in 33 overs to see his side the first win of the tournament.
Stephenson was backed up by Ali who carved out 45 as the duo shared in a crucial partnership which tilted the game UG’s way.
Medium Pacer Keon Morris took two for 19 from five overs to spearhead MSC’s unsuccessful bowling effort.
The day began with MSC winning the toss and electing to bat and posting 156 before being dismissed in the 36th over. They recovered from 32-3 to reach a decent total on the back of an eye-catching half-century from Shaquille Moseley who cracked four fours and two maximums during his innings of 58.
The inform Jeremiah Scott (22) was the only other batsman to get into the twenties as leg spinner Ershaad Ali (3-15) ended as the pick of the bowlers.
He received support from Pavindralall Persaud (2-8) who was handy at the end while Devon
Paul (2-33) and Dwayne Dodson (2-31) bowled well in tandem early on to limit the host.
