Nicholas Verwey and Nicholas Narine will clash for the open title in this year’s Ansa McAL Trading Ltd sponsored Handicap Squash tournament today after both men recorded semifinal wins last evening at the Georgetown Squash Court.
Verwey, who is one of the sport rising stars, displayed his usual workmanlike demeanour and needed every bit of his grit to topple the experienced Deje Dias.
Dias, who took the first set in animated fashion 15-13, lost his way in the next two sets as his younger opponent prevailed.
Verwey as it were, stuck to his straps and worked his way into the title match by winning the next two sets 15-7, 15-10. Verwey will come up against Narine (11) who defeated Gianni Carpenter in the other semifinal 15-9, 15-5.
Meanwhile, the category ‘A’ final will be contested between two of the country’s top junior players in Zachary Persaud and Lousi Da Silva both of whom registered convincing wins yesterday.
Persaud (-8), in his semifinal, came from a set down to defeat Shiloh Asregado (3) 2-1. Asregado copped the first set 15-9 before the effervescence of Persaud came to the fore as he rebounded to take the next two sets 15-11, 15-9 to waltz his way into the final.
Da Silva (-8) on the other hand, had a much easier route as he accounted for Matthew Spooner (9) 15-12, 15-12, only dropping six points during the entire match even as he played a tough handicap.
The finals will be contested today from 11:30hrs.
