Candidate Master Taffin Khan and Davion Mars are in the lead with the maximum three points after three rounds of the second Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) GAICO-sponsored Swiss System tournament following play Sunday afternoon at the National Resource Centre.
The two unbeaten players will clash in this afternoon’s fourth-round encounter with Mars having the white pieces and the advantage of the first move.
In Sunday’s third round Khan defeated Errol Tiwari while Mars scored an upset win over Candidate Master Ronuel Greenidge.
In sole third place is Loris Nathoo on two-and-one half points following his drawn third round encounter against the solid Shiv Nandalall.
Six players are on joint fourth position with two points and they are CM Greenidge, Tiwari, Leung, Justino Da Silva, Roberto Neto and GCF president Frankie Farley.
Four players follow on one-and-one-half points each and they are Ethan Lee, Nandalall, Sharma and Jaeden Taylor.
Former national junior champion Saeed Ali leads the bunch who are on one point each with the others being Adrian Roopnaraine, Dane Grimmond, Kenrick Brathwaite, Jacob Nauth and Glenford Corlette.
Joshua Gopaul is on half a point while Chino Chung and Uddav Bhagwandeen are yet to get off the mark.
Today’s other fixtures are Nathoo vs. Farley; Greenidge vs. Leung; Da Silva vs. Neto; Tiwari vs. Sharma; Taylor vs. Lee; Grimmond vs. Nandalall; Ali vs. Roopnaraine; Corlette vs. Nauth; Gopaul vs. Braithwaite and Chung against Bhagwandeen.
