(Jamaica Gleaner) The bloodletting continues in Clarendon despite a state of emergency blanketing the mid-island parish since September 5 as the Government seeks to peg back a runaway homicide rate.
Early yesterday morning, criminals snuffed out the life of 51-year-old Chinese businessman Wiyong Liu in May Pen.
Wiyong, who operated the Newman’s Wholesale and Liquor Store on Manchester Avenue, was discovered dead about 8 a.m. in an area commonly referred to as Guinep Tree. Persons in the area told our news team that it appeared that the deceased was shot and burnt with a substance.
“It looks like acid to how he looked. It also come in like fire did light up there,” a resident told The Gleaner as news of Wiyong’s death sent shockwaves throughout the business community.
Several business operators in the area converged at the scene in disbelief, some referencing the daring, multimillion-dollar heist of another Chinese-operated business by armed thugs in Guinep Tree earlier this year.
Up to press time last evening, the police were still collecting reports on the incident.
Wiyong’s killing comes as residents of Turtle Pond in the parish continue to mourn the shooting death of 21-year-old hairdresser Janise Simpson.
Reports from the Crofts Hill police are that about 9.30 p.m. last Saturday, Simpson and a man were in a motor vehicle along the roadway when a gunman approached them and demanded their valuables, before opening fire.
The two were taken to hospital, where Simpson died and the unidentified man admitted for treatment.
Simpson’s spouse, Delroy Young, expressed disbelief at the tragedy.
“Her death very painful. I feel it to mi heart. I am very sad to know she gone that way. I wasn’t looking for her to go that way,” said Young, who is the father of Simpson’s two-year-old daughter.
Young described her as a loving, kind-hearted person.
“She was a very good person,” he said.
Investigations into the two incidents are ongoing.
Clarendon recorded 103 murders between the start of the year and October 9.
