Golden Jaguars head-coach Marcio Maximo stated that he is pleased with the progress being made by his charges, following their commanding 5-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda on Monday in League-B of the CONCACAF Nations League.
The Guyanese ended their five game losing streak against the visitors which lasted for 13 years, following an improved performance at the National Track and Field Center, Leonora.
The vital result came on the heels of the Golden Jaguars losing to Antigua and Barbuda (2-1) on Friday October 11th at the Sir Vivian Richard Stadium.
Speaking to media operatives following the conclusion of the match, the visibly elated Brazilian native said, “Like I said before you should invest in the international and local players, I think that is a very good combination, the team is very united and they know their abilities and how they should play. I am very happy because the guys prove that we have a good team, we just need the time and the patience to improve this team. Like I said before we don’t really have development without giving chances to the local players. This combination for me is the secret for Guyana. We have a good team and a good squad.”
He further added, “I am very happy with the win and of course we should develop a lot, we just start our job but I think if we continue in this way, great days are coming for Guyana.”
Questioned about the next step in the tournament, Maximo disclosed, “The qualifiers are still open, today is good because goal average is very important for us. The competition is still open. I would like to ask the Guyanese people for the next round to come to the stadium and support our team. The guys are there, everyone working hard to give better days for Guyana football.”
Maximo admitted that while the offensive line has improved, the team still is a work in progress on the defensive end. He revealed that team was tactically setup to create chances, adding “It’s about balance, when you put your team so offensive of course sometimes you are susceptible to counterattacks because you should get goals. Of course we should improve in all departments but for me we are on the correct way.”
