A 42-year-old businesswoman was yesterday morning admitted to a city hospital after she was shot and robbed by a lone gunman who attacked her as she was about to open her business situated in the Harbour Bridge Mall, Peters Hall Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
Nelia Singh of Diamond Housing Scheme, EBD sustained a single gunshot wound to her left leg during the robbery which took place around 10.05 am.
She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and was subsequently admitted. Her condition is listed as stable.
Senior Superintendent Kurleigh Simon, Commander of Region Four (b) (Eccles – Moblissa) yesterday told Stabroek News that an investigation has been launched and investigators are in the process of reviewing surveillance footage in a bid to identify and apprehend the suspect.
Simon said the police are yet to interview Singh.
Stabroek News understands that Singh owns and operates Best Value Pawn Shop situated upstairs in the mall.
According to a police press statement, the businesswoman had just arrived at the mall and was about to open her business for the day when she was approached by the gunman who was waiting at the southern entrance.
“The suspect reportedly held on to the victim’s bag and a scuffle ensued during which the victim was shot,” the police said.
The suspect escaped with the bag Singh had in her possession.
The contents of the bag, the police said, remain unknown.
