A majestic century from Police Sports Club’s opening batsman Andrew Lyght Jr., followed by a destructive spell from off-spinner Rocky Hutson handed the hosts day one honours against Everest in the ongoing Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA), Noble House Seafoods, Second-Division, two-day competition yesterday.
Police, after winning the toss and electing to bat, declared their innings closed on 323-9 from 61.5 overs with Lyght Jr., smashing 123 to lift his side to the daunting first innings total.
Chemroy Kendall (58) and Ameer Singh (49) supported Lyght Jr., as seamer Raylex Payne (4-68) and left-arm spinner Javed Rasheed (3-75) shared seven wickets between them. Everest, in their first innings response, ended the day reeling on 61-5 from 27 overs with off-spinner Hutson (4-13) doing the damage with the ball for the hosts. Everest heads into day two still training by a massive 262 runs with four wickets in hand.
Meanwhile, over at the Demerara Cricket Club (DCC), the hosts are locked in battle with the University of Guyana (UG). The day’s proceedings saw DCC winning the toss and electing to bowl. The students were in a spot of bother early on at 37-3 but a counter-attack partnership worth 135 runs for the fourth wicket between Omesh Danram (85) and Ershaad Ali (52) rescued the Turkeyen side.
DCC fought back valiantly and limited the students to 203 all out in 33.2 overs. Seamers Dexter George (4-41), Carlton Jacques Jr., (3-51) and Dequan Bamfield (3-39) claimed the wickets for the Queenstown side.
At close of play DCC were precariously placed at 120-6 from 34 overs, still training by 83 runs.
Jacques is at the crease unbeaten on 31 and with him is Gustavo Hutson on five. Earlier, Brandon Jaikarran (25), Derwin Christian (23) and Dexter George (24) all failed to convert starts.
Yekini Favourite has so far taken 2-43. Play resumes at 10:30hrs today and an enthralling day of cricket is anticipated.
