Conservation group hoping to pioneer jewellery line from mercury-free mining

Conservation International-Guyana (CI-G) is pioneering a project that could see the development of mercury-free jewellery under the El Dorado brand.

In an advertisement in yesterday’s Sunday Stabroek, CI-G said it is seeking letters of expressions of interest from suitable concessionaires for mining concessions “for the conduct of demonstrations that showcase alternative technologies for the verifiable production of mercury-free gold that builds the capacity of miners in the use of such technologies”.

CI-G said that it is in receipt of funding from the Global Environment Fund (GEF) for the implementation of the project which it labelled `A GEF GOLD/Supply Chain Approach to Eliminating Mercury in Guyana’s Artisanal, Small- and Medium-scale Gold Mining (ASGM) Sector: El Dorado Gold Jewellery – Made in Guyana’.  It said that the project is of four years’ duration and seeks to assist Guyana with converting to mercury-free mining by 2025.

It said that the project will accomplish this by directly involving business enterprises with a profit motive in the development of a mercury-free ASGM supply chain and El Dorado Gold brand jewellery.

The terms of reference for the project can be found on http://www.conservation.org.gy. Expressions of interest must be delivered by 6 pm on November 6th, 2019.
