A passport office is to be established at Mabaruma in Region One.
According to the Department of Public Information (DPI) this was announced by Director-General in the Ministry of the Presidency Joseph Harmon at a community engagement with residents of Hosororo, Barima-Waini, on Saturday.
DPI said today that while the office will be located in Mabaruma, it will also serve residents of the Matarkai and Moruca subdistricts.
During the meeting, DPI said that a resident requested a more efficacious registration system in the region to ease the burden residents faced over the last few decades in obtaining birth certificates, passports and marriage certificates. “Residents leave from here to go to town to look after birth certificates and sometimes it takes months to come back,” the resident lamented.
Harmon said that the establishment of the passport office in the township will allow for greater extension of government services including the registration of births and deaths.
