As part of its contribution to the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Carnegie School of Home Economics (CSHE) last week advised patients at the Cancer Institute of Guyana (CIG) about the benefits of practising healthy eating habits.
The team, headed by nutritionist, Iverene Phillips, shared samples of natural teas and juices with the patients. The juices were made with fruits and vegetables including apples, carrots, beet and callaloo, while the teas were made with lemon grass, soursop leaves, turmeric and ginger.
The team displayed the items at a booth and also shared recipes for the juices and teas.
Phillips encouraged the patients to eat more garlic as well as carrots, tomatoes and green leafy vegetables, as they are “very strong in antioxidants to fight cancer cells.”
Oncologist, Dr. Sayan Chakraborty and Outreach Director, Dr. Syed Ghazi of the CIG expressed gratitude to the CSHE for its initiative in promoting healthy eating for the patients as it goes hand in hand with their treatment.
