Ahead of the upcoming Guyana Open, the country’s best golfers took to the Lusignan Golf Course last weekend where Patanjalee `Pur’ Persaud won the Citizen’s Bank Cancer Awareness title Saturday while Guillermo Escarraga dominated the field Sunday in the Banks DIH Classic.
Persaud won the overall net title with a tournament low of 64 in the ‘B’ Flight 10-18 handicap.
He was trailed by a three-man tie for second place among Aasrodeen Shaw (70/13), William Walker (70/11) and Satrohan Tiwari (70/16) who edged out Shaw and Walker in the tie-break.
In the championship 0-9 Flight, Patrick Prashad, Mike Mangal, Lusignan Golf Club President, Aleem Hussain and nine-time defending Guyana Open Champion, Avinash Persaud all shot a gross of 80.
However, Prashad emerged net champion ahead of Mangal on the back nine countback while Persaud settled for the best gross overall due to a better back nine of 36.
Mangra strolled off with the Nearest to the Pin prize while Avinash Persaud blasted the longest drive for the sixth consecutive time.
In the 19-28 Flight, Nirmaldeo Sarwan netted 66 to pip Escarraga on 67 and Jordi Pinol on 69.
Escarraga with a net 61 off a 21 handicap ended with the best net performance. Former LGC President, Jerome Khan, was second with a net 70 while Mauro Remiro and Miguel Oviedo each ended with 78/28 scores. Jordi Pinol (86/28), Lloyd Fung-A-Fat (87/28), Mario Acuna (89/28), Eion Blue (90/28) and Solomon Bannister (96/28) also recorded good scores.
In the largest group of the three categories, the 10-18 Flight, Mike Guyadin (64/14) was the winner and Mahindranauth Tewari (67/15) second. They were followed by Bridgelall Harry (68/16), Lakram Ramsundar (69/18), Rakesh Harry (71/18), Satrohan Tiwari (73/16), Aasrodeen Shaw (74/13), Deoram Dinanath (74/15), Hilbert Shields (74/16), and George Bulkan and Ian Gouveia (75/16).
In the highly anticipated the 0-9 category, Avinash Persaud retained the Best Gross score with 73 with previous Guyana Open winner, Avinda Kishore, producing a gross of 75. The net winners were Kishore (70/5) and Avinash Persaud (71/2). The performances of Mike Mangal (72/9), Aleem Hussain (73/8), Alfred Mentore (74/9) and Patrick Prashad (75/9) were notable.
